In 1999 Kevin and Debbie Jones moved with a few families from Ashburton to begin meeting in the Royal Show Grounds and North Hills Church was birthed. From the beginning, the values we celebrate today, have been held to. We are in the third generation of lead elders after Richard and Shelagh LO led from 2011 - 2019. In 2023 our name changed to City Pillar Church as an expression of what we have been for the past quarter century and who we intend to be for the next.
At City Pillar Church our every effort and daily joy is to know Jesus and to make Him known. Jesus is the centre of all we believe – all we have is given by Him, all we are is because of Him and all we do is for Him. We believe that life only truly begins at the moment of being reconciled to the Father through the saving work of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and ascension. This gift of new life is freely given and available to all.
We believe that salvation is the beginning of a relationship with God our Father. This relationship takes the form of a journey in which God through His Spirit guides us into ever increasing measures of freedom and fruitfulness. We believe that God has called us to grow our faith in Him alongside other believers in an authentic community built on the foundation of His love, under the authority of His written Word.
We believe the church is God’s hands and feet to outwork His plan to redeem a broken world – each person has a unique and vital role to play in this great mission.
At City Pillar Church our every effort and daily joy is to grow in Knowing Jesus and Making Him Known.
Will you join us on this great adventure?
Our kids are very precious, God-given gifts to us. We take seriously the calling for one generation to tell the next of the mighty works of God. We do this on a Sunday through a dedicated Kids teaching as part of our Sunday service. We also have Truth Seekers junior youth group that meets on a Friday where deep biblical truth is taught and much fun is had by all.
We know that the teenage years can be hard. We also know, that in Christ, they can be richly fruitful. That is our mission - to see our teens rooted in the deep truths of Christ and His Kingdom and see them equipped and activated in their faith to be fruitful through their high school years. Counter Culture is for those in high school and meets on Fridays.
No Christian is to be an island. We are all designed in Christ to share our Christian journey with others. Midweek connect groups are wonderful opportunities to see this outworked. We have groups located around the city to ensure you can find a group to connect with.
We are called to declare the glories of Christ in all nations. For this reason, we plan multiple trips annually to different regions and nations. All are welcome to take part in these life-changing trips across cultural and even national borders. We go to connect with other believers and encourage them in their work and to reach out to the lost and dying in those distant lands.
Our desire and aim is to be a pillar in our city - an impact and an influence to our neighbors for the glory of the name of Jesus. This happens primarily through the saints being activated and effective in their spheres of influence. We also have ministries where as a community we work into a local hospital and on the streets with the homeless. Get in touch to see how you can get connected with one of the teams.
We know that if God does not move on our behalf we cannot be effective and ultimately cannot survive. Prayer connects people, places and situations with the wisdom and power of the Almighty God. We integrate prayer into all our meetings but also set time aside to gather as a community for corporate prayer. Come and see God moving and working in many wonderful ways.
The early church devoted themselves to fellowship - we aim also to be devoted to this indispensable habit of grace. We know this cant work well through programs but we do set time aside to encourage opportunities for fellowship. This happens on a Sunday after the service with tea and chatting and games for the youngsters. We also have quarterly family picnics after the Sunday service. Annually we have a whole-church family camp.
We see one pattern shown in the scriptures for church leadership – that is every local church is to be led by a body of Elders, supported by another body of leaders called deacons.
